FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — Three individuals, including a police officer, were wounded after authorities say a vehicle attempted to enter the secure campus of the Nationwide Security Agency at Fort Meade on Wednesday morning.
Gunshots had been fired during the incident, but authorities say they do not believe any of the accidental injuries resulted from gunfire.
At an information conference Wednesday afternoon, Gordon Manley, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Baltimore field office, said the particular FBI is still collecting evidence yet believes it was an isolated event.
“I cannot emphasize enough that people believe there is no indication that this includes a nexus to terrorism, ” Manley told reporters gathered at a car parking lot next to the National Cryptologic Museum.
Johnson said the three hurt were the driver of the vehicle, a good NSA police officer and a civilian onlooker. He would not give any information about how they were injured or that opened fire.
Two other people who had been in the vehicle have been taken in to custody and were being asked, Johnson said. The injuries experienced by the police officer and the onlooker failed to appear to be life threatening, he stated. He did not have any information regarding the driver’s injuries.
The incident started when the vehicle tried to enter the secret agent agency’s campus without authorization close to 7 a. m., the NSA said in a statement. The declaration said weapons were fired yet “preliminary reports do not presently suggest that there are injuries attributable to gunfire. inch
The FBI is leading the particular investigation.
Images from local information outlets showed authorities surrounding 2 handcuffed people after a black VEHICLE ran into a barrier outside the Baltimore base.
Johnson said he failed to know why the people in the automobile were at the facility.
“I have no the answer to that, ” this individual said. “We are trying to put that will as our question one in regards to what put these individuals on this compound previously this morning. ”
President Donald Trump has been “briefed on the shooting in Ft. Meade, ” and the Whitened House offered thoughts and praying with those who have been affected, spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.
An image extracted from a WRC-TV helicopter showed the authorities and fire department response away from facility. WRC said bullet openings could be seen in the vehicle’s front side window, and air bags were used. Blood-stained material could be seen on a lawn.
After the shooting, authorities closed a significant highway in both directions, causing main backups throughout the area during hurry hour.
Despite prominent highway indicators, drivers occasionally take the wrong leave and end up at the tightly guaranteed gates. Most motorists then meticulously follow the orders of heavily equipped federal officers and turn around with out getting into more trouble.
But in earlier 2015, two people were shot on by NSA police when they disobeyed orders outside the heavily secured campus. One driver died at the picture after NSA police opened open fire on a stolen sports utility vehicle. Authorities later on said they had stolen a car from the man who picked them on with a party at a motel.
