CHARLOTTE, N. D. (AP) — As the sun went up on the Saturday morning celebration of the unprecedented NCAA Tournament upset, Thomas Odom implored his suddenly-famous golf ball team to get some sleep.

It had been time for family and friends associated with UMBC to leave the resort and for the Retrievers to return for their rooms. On any other night, that they had have started a “Fortnite” video gaming battle to unwind.

The gamers sitting this one out.

The only devices the particular Retrievers were tethered to had been their phones.

UMBC had produced history as the first No . sixteen seed in NCAA Men’s Competition history to knock off the No . 1 seed and the text messages and the calls never stopped humming.

And it wouldn’t take more than a fast scroll to find out they were trending.

Upward next, UMBC plays No . nine seed Kansas State (23-11) upon Sunday with a Sweet 16 berth at stake.

UMBC is a commuter college in Baltimore – one where the chess team reigns supreme, believe it or not – and they had just checkmated No . 1 Virginia. The bracket-busting sweethearts were suddenly linked with Buster Douglas, the Miracle on Snow and Chaminade on the short list associated with sports all-time upsets.

The pithy tweets from its Twitter account produced highlight reels. The school website damaged. Virginia turned into a punchline.

For the players, the ones no other teams needed, it was simply surreal.

“I’m obtaining so many notifications that my cell phone froze, ” said K. L. Maura, the emotional floor chief who played all 40 a few minutes Friday night.

Joe Sherburne, who seem to drained three big 3-pointers towards Virginia, spent his newfound amount of time in the spotlight hoping NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers will notice your pet. Sherburne is a Wisconsin native that wasn’t recruited by anyone yet UMBC.

On one of his couple of chances to shine on the sport’s biggest stage, Sherburne hit the second-half 3 and mimed Rodgers’ trademark “discount double-check” celebration.

“I’m his biggest fan. I want your pet to see it on TV, (so) in case anybody knows him…, ” Sherburne said.

He made his following plea a brief one.

He did not pack enough clean underwear for 2 rounds of the tournament, and could make use of another pair. And he’d be thankful if people would learn UMBC’s correct mascot.

“We’re the Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, not the Fantastic Retrievers, ” he said. “They are dark brown. They have a heavy waterproof coat of fur. inch

They were a different kind of dog prior to tip – a 20 1/2-point underdog to the ACC champs.

Hey there, they’ve whittled it down to 10-points against the Wildcats.

The odds are probably a whole lot worse that the casual fan even understands what UMBC stands for.

It’s the College of Maryland, Baltimore County, not really – as newspaper headlines plus TV analysts suggested – Oughout Must Be Cinderella.

But if the slipper suits, UMBC is happy to wear it plus basked in its 15 minutes of popularity. Odom wasn’t going to deny all of them their time.

“I’m not the kind of guy that’s going to take their mobile phones, ” Odom said. “They’ve have got to do the right thing, learn how to the actual right thing. We’ve got to motivate our guys and I’ve currently told them, ‘Do you want to be carried out now or do you want to try to place your best foot forward and keep on? ‘”

They most certainly want to perform on past Kansas State plus seize as many March moments as it can be.

Luke Maye, Kenny Williams plus Cameron Johnson represented defending nationwide champion North Carolina in Saturday’s information conference at Charlotte and not one of these had ever heard of a player at the UMBC roster.

Maye, of a Charlotte now suburb, recalled Odom recruiting your pet when Odom coached at Charlotte now.

Then Williams kind of remembered some thing.

“Jairus Lyles was at VCU, ” said Williams, a Va native.

Yes, Lyles was as soon as at VCU and played right now there under Shaka Smart. His mother and father went to Virginia and he grew up the Cavaliers fan. But his turning basketball road led him through famed DeMatha Catholic to VCU before he transferred to UMBC to become closer to home.

Lyles is a graduate student who could have left UMBC to play for a bigger program. Yet he was committed to the Retrievers and led them Friday night time against Virginia with 28 factors on 9-of-11 shooting.

Lyles would not leave the Baltimore school due to his fondness for school chief executive Freeman Hrabowski III. He prospective customers a school whose chess group boasts six national championships and February finally moved its golf ball team to a state-of-the-art arena rather than its decades-old Fieldhouse. UMBC’s shiny new basketball facility seats five, 000 – a far weep from the stage it played upon Friday night in front of 20, two hundred at the Charlotte Hornets’ arena.

Yet Lyles insisted this team will not get nervous and that the connection between players is real. Maura featured UMBC is “the funniest group in the country. We are top-10 for sure. inch

These players are so connected, these people claim, that they twice blew away from Odom’s game-closing call against Vermont in the America East conference tournament. The NCAA Tournament berth had been on the line and Odom wanted Maura to run a handoff play.

“We wanted to isolate Jairus and allow him to take it. Then he called another perform and we also said, ‘No, we all don’t want to screen. Jairus one-on-one. We knew he was going to take those shot and make it, ” Maura said.

Lyles buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give UMBC the particular upset conference championship.

Then they handily knocked out the top team within the tournament. The team has each reason to believe it can take out Kansas State on Sunday night within the e second round.

“We’re unsatisfied. We go in with the mentality we will win another game, ” Maura said.
